What it means
The sinuses are air spaces in the bones around the nose and eyes. A thin, moist lining (mucosa) covers their walls. Colds, allergies and infections can irritate it and make it swell. On CT it shows as a gray rim along the sinus walls, and on MRI as a bright rim. Small amounts are seen in many people without any sinus symptoms.
When it matters
Mild thickening seen on a scan done for another reason rarely needs action. Its importance depends on symptoms, such as a blocked nose, facial pain or thick discharge lasting weeks. Doctors look more closely at a fluid level, a flat line of fluid that can go with a sudden infection. One-sided changes that affect the bone also get a closer look. Your doctor may suggest a dedicated sinus CT or a specialist visit.
Questions to ask your doctor
- Is this thickening mild, or does it suggest an active sinus infection?
- Could it explain my blocked nose or facial pain, or is it incidental?
- Would a dedicated sinus CT or a specialist visit help?
