What it means

Prominent is a soft, cautious word. It says a structure stands out a little more than average. Lymph nodes, ducts, blood vessels and the fluid spaces in the brain are often described this way. It is weaker than enlarged or dilated, and the structure is often still normal in size. Radiologists use it to mention something without calling it abnormal.

When it matters

On its own, prominent is usually not a cause for concern. Normal sizes vary widely with age, body size and past surgery. Doctors consider whether it fits your symptoms and blood tests, and look more closely if it has grown since an earlier scan. Sometimes they suggest a follow-up scan or another test to make sure it stays the same.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Is the prominent structure still within the normal size range?
  • Could it be normal for my age, body size or past surgery?
  • Does it need to be measured again on a later scan?
