What it means
Every joint holds a little fluid that keeps it moving smoothly. An effusion means there is more than usual. MRI and ultrasound show the fluid clearly. On an X-ray it may show as swelling or, in the elbow, as fat pads pushed out of place. Reports often grade the amount as trace, small, moderate or large.
When it matters
A trace or small effusion is common and often means little. A larger one suggests the joint is irritated, for example after an injury, with arthritis or gout, or with other inflammation. Doctors read it together with the rest of the scan, which may show the cause, such as a torn meniscus. If infection is a concern, they may draw off some fluid with a needle to test it.
Questions to ask your doctor
- Is the amount of fluid normal for this joint, or more than expected?
- What do you think is causing the extra fluid?
- Would testing a sample of the fluid be useful in my case?
